Northern Arizona Academy
NAA and the Navajo County Drug Project
Civil Rights Day
Northern Arizona Academy is proud to have partnered with the Navajo County Drug Project and local volunteers to honor Civil Rights Day and the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. through volunteerism. Northern Arizona Academy staff, students, and parents were joined by local families to celebrate “a day on” during the Civil Rights Day holiday by sending teams of volunteers out in the community to help with outdoor and household projects for local senior citizens. Projects included yard waste clean-up and removal, landscaping, garbage removal, moving furniture, cleaning, and light maintenance projects. 36 individuals volunteered their time, and projects were completed at eight sites in the Snowflake-Taylor area. Volunteers also registered through the Hands on Network to qualify for the Give a Day, Get a Disney Day program, and all volunteers earned a free pass to Disney.
Northern Arizona Academy is a North Central Accredited alternative high school that has offered quality educational services in the White Mountain area since 1995. We emphasize individual learning plans, non-traditional approaches to education, and community service. Last year NAA began the annual service learning spring break with a trip to New Orleans, LA to help Hurricane Katrina victims. This spring, we will continue the tradition, with our second annual service learning spring break trip to San Diego, CA. NAA’s Student Council has chosen to spend their spring break volunteering with the San Diego River Park Foundation. During the week, students, staff, and parents will pick up litter, remove invasive species, restore native plant habitats, and build and maintain trails along the San Diego River. Students will enhance their understanding of ecological issues including habitat preservation and restoration, as well as water conservation issues. For information please call 928-536-4222.
